I know there are many tragic stories during this recession/depression. But the fact is, for many people this is a crisis of their own making. Over the past few generations, North Americans have been deluded into believing they deserve the good things in life. How many people have lived far beyond their means these past few/many years? I’ve heard of too many stories of people getting a new job at GM or some other car plant recently and then buying some big house in the suburbs or country side, two giant cars, etc…You know the story….Are they stupid?
Who in the past few years would think that such a job would be safe?! If you’re in that field, you should know the climate. And the clear warning signs have been around these past few years. The only ones I feel sorry for are those who’ve been at the plant for many years and could thus expect some kind of future there. Anyone else who found employment at such a job recently and decided to live beyond their means is a fool. They should have bought a modest home or rented first, saved up their ridiculously high salaries (seriously, the kind of money some people get working on an assembly line is just plain silly!), and tentatively tested out the waters before making any large purchases.
But nooooo….Too many of these people thought that they could finally get theirs. They could finally catch up to the Joneses…They could finally have all the things in life they deserve, even if they never did anything in life to warrant such expectations. That’s what entitlement gets you.
To be clear, I’m not being flippant about people in crisis. And far too many people in so many different jobs have been truly blindsided and had no reason to expect that the bottom would fall out. This is a tragedy for many such people.
But the fact is, the type of people I first described above were foolish and delusional. And many others were too “entitled” to think that they should consider concepts such as RESTRAINT. Far too many people all around the world have lost sight of what is important in life. Far too many parents have fucked up their kids. Far too many people have bought into the delusion of mass, blind consumerism–shop till you drop, baby! Far too many assholes think that Donald Trump is a hero.
The CEOs, politicians, bankers, etc. are to blame for much of the economic shitstorm we’re in now. But let’s not give the hundreds of millions of “common folk” who’ve contributed to this nightmare a free ride. Own up, people…
