What a Turkey…

Thursday, July 28th, 2011
Okay, so it’s getting harder and harder to look past Mayor Ford’s personality and judgment as I praise him for his efforts to finally bring responsibility and accountability to City Hall. I mean, his handlers are like bodyguards and his brother Doug might as well wear the “I AM MAYOR” pin. But this latest story of his talking on a cell phone while driving is really ugly. Bad enough he flouts the law—which many of us can probably admit to as well, at least once, so I’m not really focusing on that—but then he gives the finger to a woman who tries to hold him accountable for such an act? And in front of her kid?
Now, Ford apologists and some others are blaming her for being a busy body and saying she could have provoked road rage. So now we’re going to blame victims for when people commit horrible and illegal acts on the road (road rage, that is)? But let’s have no doubt: Ford really did give her the finger, otherwise he would have categorically denied it, rather than call it a “misunderstanding.” That is one of the most classless things a MAYOR could do, especially when caught doing something illegal! What a jerk.
Speaking of jerks, Ford’s brother’s true colours came out when he said that he didn’t have to listen to Margaret Atwood about closing libraries because she’s not a councilor/politician. Now, I usually don’t like when artists, entertainers, athletes or other “celebrities” spout off about things they know little about just because they have a platform—unless they are well informed, balanced, reasonable and aren’t being sanctimonious jerks about it. But for Doug Ford to say what he did, regardless of how he feels about Atwood and her opinions, shows his real arrogance and disdain for the public.
Trust me, councilor Doug Ford truly believes he is now “an untouchable overlord of the city” and believes he knows better than people who are much smarter and better informed than he is. If his brother had not become so popular this year, Doug Ford would have never won any seat anywhere. And everything positive I’ve said about Rob Ford and his commitment to public service applies only to Rob Ford, not to his brother because his brother never held such a job. He just rode his brother’s coattails to victory. He comes across as an arrogant bully and a megalomaniac, and too many idiots are going to blindly believe he’s something that he is not, simply because he’s Rob Ford’s brother. Wake up, people, and examine the emperor’s—or puppet master’s—attire more closely…

Mayor Rob Ford leaves a TV interview in his beige minivan on Friday. A woman says she later saw him driving the vehicle and speaking on his cellphone.

Ford Has No Pride

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

I personally think that, as the mayor of Toronto—one of the most LGBT (etc.)-positive cities in the world—Rob Ford should have briefly attended the Pride parade or played some other role during the week-long celebration. However, despite being the first mayor since 1994 not to do so, I don’t think he should have been FORCED to attend. But I also think that everyone who made an effort to get him to look past his fear, ignorance and/or personal biases was well within their rights to do so, as long as they conducted their efforts in a decent manner; some clearly did not do so. Afterward, if Ford chose not to participate, as he did, he will have to face the consequences with respect to his image within the city, across the country and abroad, not to mention the voting booths in a couple of years.

But I still believe it should be his choice. Having said that, I am disappointed in Ford’s blatant dishonesty about the matter. If he wants to stand up and say, as he did “I don’t believe in gay marriage,” I think he should be able to do so and not be branded homophobic, as long as he does not try to do anything that would infringe on other people’s rights to get married to a same-sex partner in any way.

This is not to say that Ford is not homophobic; maybe he is but I don’t know based on what I’ve seen of him thus far. Opposing gay marriage may make one “homo negative” but that on its own does not make someone homophobic. Those evil Muslim speakers calling for death to all gays/lesbians yesterday ARE clearly homophobic. But let’s not throw the term around just because someone opposes gay marriage and makes some ignorant statements about homosexuality. Again, I’m not defending Ford and I am not saying he is not homophobic. I’m just not prepared to say unequivocally that he IS homophobic based on what I’ve seen of him so far.

However, I CAN say he’s being very disingenuous in his claim that he is not attending the Pride Parade due to family tradition. Several different people and organizations—including Newstalk 1010 radio station—made offers to arrange transportation for Ford to and from the parade, in such a way that he might miss out on only 4 or 5 hours of his family vacation. Come on, Ford, you probably took naps that long over the weekend!

Just come clean and say, “I feel very uncomfortable with the open displays of homosexuality and/or sexuality that takes place at Pride, thus I choose not to attend, either as a spectator or mayor. I would then have at least a little bit of respect for your taking a principled stance, even if I disagree with your principles in this case. But lying as you did is pathetic and a clear sign that you lack character.

And Ford and his supporters should not be surprised if many people (now) doubt his claim that his previous attempts to halt funding for the parade was due solely to the participation of those assholes, Queers Against Apartheid Israel. No, that was just a convenient excuse, even if I agree with his sentiment in that case. But I disagree with his cowardly lies about the real reason he tried to refuse funding for the Pride Parade. For the record, I agree with halting funding for the parade because I believe it could receive ample private sponsorship. But the difference is that I am saying this for purely fiscal reasons and would apply it to all such parades because the city is broke. If people have a cause they truly believe in, they should be able to organize themselves to arrange for private funding in most cases.

And before anyone tries to lump me in with Ford vis a vis his discomfort around (homo)sexuality, those who know me and my background know that such an attempt would be the silliest thing possible. I’m a FISCAL conservative but a very SOCIAL liberal.

SHAME…

Monday, June 20th, 2011

I know people differ on this, but I believe that it’s a good thing to publish the pictures and names of people caught doing illegal activities. Some of them will feel true shame and embarrassment—they are the people with a conscience who got caught up in the moment and did something stupid. But they still need to be punished accordingly, depending on their actions.

People with a conscience, judgment and morals who know there’s a chance they will suffer a similar fate will be deterred by the public shaming of miscreants, fools, and others. We used to internalize this sense of shame/morals with proper parenting 0r religion—not that I’m a fan of how religion is taught, and not that I’m advocating corporal punishment or making kids feel like pieces of crap. But it’s clear that, with the breakdown of family and communities, morals (which can be developed without religion, if you’re a humanist like I am) have been lost and people are not deterred from acting badly out of a fear of shaming/disgracing their family or “tribe.”

I think this public shaming will make some people think twice about acting like barbarians, criminals, scumbags etc. And if it’s not the shaming, then the loss of jobs and other appropriate consequences should also work as a deterrent, as long as the families of these people are not harmed, threatened, menaced or aggrieved in any way—unless they are somehow involved or try to defend the scumbag’s actions. Then they deserve at least harassment for encouraging such ugliness.

Meet the New Boss…Same as the Old Boss…

Monday, May 30th, 2011

I guess many Ontarians really are as pathetic as I’ve always believed. Readers of this blog know I have always despised Premier McGuinty ever since he first unsuccessfully ran against Mike Harris many years ago. And I warned not to trust anyone whose sole platform was “I am not Harris.” Well, Tim Hudak is not only pulling a McGuinty with his “I am not McGuinty” approach, but he’s also copying Harris’ successful but very ugly and simplistic approach of making crazy/impossible promises—I swear, we’ll cut taxes but not cut services—while blinding the ignorant electorate with emotional hot-button slogans.

Oh, and he’s even doing “better” than either Harris or McGuinty by already promising not to change some of the major things he complained about for months: he’ll keep the HST and all-day kindergarten. Normally, these scumbag politicians would simply lie and say they’re going to scrap these programs…until they get in office. Then things magically change. EVERY politician of every stripe at every level of government has pulled this bullshit and people keep letting them do it because “that’s just the way politics is.” This is cynicism at its best…or worst. But Hudak must realize that McGuinty is so hated (polls tell him that) that he can admit ahead of time that he won’t touch these programs. That way, he’ll avoid breaking at least two major promises, which gives him more room to break several more big promises.

So, 9 years is all it takes for idiots to forget the past? Great. Fuck you, McGuinty for being even worse than Harris in so many ways. Fuck you, Harris because you’re evil. Fuck you, Hudak for being “smart” enough to realize how stupid your constituents are. And fuck you, Ontarians for proving to politicians time and again that their utter contempt for you is well founded.

What? You Were Expecting JUSTICE? Don’t You Know Where You Are?!

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Please read the COMMENTS section below to see the recent Sun story about how the pathetic Special Investigations Unit has earned that name honestly. I mean, think of “special” as in “special education” or “Isn’t that special?” Will we EVER get any justice for the affront that was the G20 in Toronto last year. Nope. They will continue to stall until it fades from our collective conscious. Just ask the family of Dudley George (just one of many amazing blunders in the mishandling of the Ipperwash crisis)…

And yes, I appreciate that the SIU’s job is very difficult when police can say “fuck you” to the investigation, so why doesn’t the PM or Premier enact legislation that would give the SIU any real power? Because then they would not be able to use the police, RCMP, CSIS and other forces to do their dirty work, as they have done for many years. Yes, we’re better than China, North Korea, Somalia, etc., but can’t we set our bar a wee bit higher?

There’s Something Wrong With Me…

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

I am swamped with work and have had no time to post on all the news that is happening.

Bin Laden gets killed—although part of me believes he died many years but it was never reported so that the US could keep their greatest bogey man alive; then Obama needed something to give his popularity a lift and he knew Bush’s regime could never come forward and admit they had lied, so he had his guys go in and kill some other dudes…

Harper’s Conservatives finally win their majority, so now Canada can see what a true dictatorship looks like; okay, dictatorship lite…Canadians finally show that they’re sick and tired of all the corruption and entitlement of the Liberals under years of crap by Chretien (wait till you see what happens under Harper; he’ll make Mulroney and his gang seem like angels) and decide to give ol’ Jack Layton and the NDP a shot. Of course, he has no power and he’ll provide a lot of great media, but not much more. And Elizabeth May’s Green Party finally one ONE seat—hers. Oh, and the scumbags who want to destroy Canada (no, not Harper’s Conservatives) have been all but decimated thanks to Layton’s NDP; in fact, some of the people who were elected via the NDP reportedly ran as a joke, thinking they would never win! But people were so pissed at Duceppe and the Bloc, and they liked Layton, so they voted for their NDP candidate! Seriously…And I’ll admit that this is the first time in any election that I had no idea how it was going to turn out so I made no predictions; even if I had, I would have never thought this would happen, although I was pretty worried about the Harper majority, in light of recent trends in Toronto and Ontario.

But despite all this and more, the one thing I can’t get over is THIS link. Check it out:

http://www.thatvideosite.com/video/quite_possibly_the_creepiest_most_uncomfortable_thing_youll_ever_see

It’s from an old Canadian show, Just Like Mom. Watch it and try not to get creeped out and outraged. This creepy scumbag was also the voice of the Toronto Blue Jays for many years.

F’ You, Pakistan!

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

In Canada, we are far too politically correct. We’re afraid to call barbarism what it is. As much as I complain about our ineffective just-ass system, at least the SPIRIT of our legal system is not horribly corrupt. At least we’re not PAKISTAN. Seriously, that country is so far backwards I can’t believe they have nuclear capabilities. And that’s a scary, scary thought. The New York Times article in the COMMENTS section tells of yet another case whereby an innocent woman is brutalized by scumbag neanderthals who get away with it. What’s worst is that their barbarism is sanctioned—nay, DEMANDED—by their fucked up social/legal system.

This is how the article begins: The Supreme Court announced on Thursday that it would uphold the acquittals of five of the six men accused in the gang rape of Mukhtar Mai, the resilient woman who gained international recognition and emerged as a symbol of voiceless and oppressed women in Pakistan.

And then this is the part that should make every Pakistani embarrassed to be a citizen of such a fucked up country: The rape was said to be a punishment for her younger brother’s supposed illicit relations with a woman from a rival tribe, the Mastoi. Later investigations found the boy had been molested by Mastoi tribesmen and the accusation against him had been a cover-up.

The Fate of Canada…

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

What’s a poor citizen to do in this upcoming Federal election?

Harper has done a great job of keeping the country afloat during a horrible recession but he’s a dictator at heart and I don’t trust him as far as I can throw my lunch.

Ignatieff is…well, he’s Ignatieff. He missed 70% of the votes in Parliament. He’s out of touch with ordinary citizens (not that Harper necessarily is), and there’s nothing about him that makes me think the Liberals will be any different from how they were under Chretien (and Martin). I don’t know whose regime was more corrupt–theirs or Mulroney’s.

Layton is a self-serving prima dona who will say and do anything to get a bit of camera time and power. Okay, that describes most politicians but Layton is an extreme example of these terrible traits. Trust me, I know. But I like the NDP in principle; however, lefties in Toronto and Ontario these past number of years have become a stereotype…

May is irrelevant, as none of her party will get elected, even if they can get a small percentage of overall votes.

Duceppe is irrelevant as I don’t live in Quebec. It will be interesting to see how this scumbag ends up interacting with the power brokers to possibly form a coalition with the enemy.

I know I’ve overly simplified the issues but I’m too busy to write more. In fact, I haven’t had the time to comment on any of the stories that have been floating around recently. <sigh>

I Really DO Hate Being Right Sometimes…

Monday, April 11th, 2011

I’ve said so many times on this site that, where there’s smoke there’s fire. Gregory Sappleton has twice been acquitted of heinous crimes against children, not because he’s innocent but because our just-ass system is incompetent, inefficient, ineffective and biased toward the scumbags that ruin society. Well, Mr. teflon was arrested again for armed robbery. Since this is Canada, he should be out of jail by the time you read this message (and the Sun story in the COMMENTS section below).

Gregory Sappleton, seen here leaving court in December after being acquitted in the death of Ephraim Brown, is facing charges with another man in an armed robbery. Harper Still Acting Like a Dictator

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011
If you read the COMMENTS section, you will see an article on how Harper’s goons kicked out several young people in the most undemocratic manner. I don’t care how they try to spin this: As I’ve been saying for years, Harper is a bully and a control freak who does not believe in democracy within his party or within our country. The only problem is that the Liberals proved themselves unworthy of running this country after years of scandal and bad governance under Chretien and Martin, and I’ve never trusted Layton over the many years I’ve been following his act. We’re screwed…
